Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra (Kyievo-Pecherska Lavra), also known as the Kyiv Monastery of the Caves,
is a historic Eastern Orthodox Christian monastery.
In the Lower Lavra, where the caves are located, there is a currently operating monastery,
and its Upper part is under the department of the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine and is a
National Historical and Cultural Reserve. The brethren of the monastery regularly perform divine
services in the Refectory Church of St. Anthony and Theodosius of Pechersk and the main church of the monastery - the Assumption Cathedral.
Within the walls of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra, the Kiev Theological Seminary, revived in 1989,
now operates, and since 1992, the Kiev Theological Academy, the building of which was previously located
in one of the districts of the capital - Podol, where the famous secular higher education institution - Kiev - is currently located.
The residence of the Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the Synodal departments are located
on the territory of the existing Pechersk Monastery. His Beatitude the Metropolitan of Kiev and All
Ukraine is the sacred archimandrite of the Holy Dormition Kiev-Pechersk Lavra.
During the Soviet era, the bodies of the saints that lay in the caves were left uncovered due to the regime's disregard for religion.
However, after the fall of the Soviet Union, the bodies were covered with a cloth and to this day remain in the same state.
